Legion

Death caused by love!

What can I say about Flying Deuces?

One it is a comedy, it was directed by Edward Sutherland, and the plot is that Ollie (played by Oliver Hardy) is heart broken after he finds out that Georgette (played by Jean Parker), the innkeeper’s daughter that he has fallen in love with and asked to marry, was already married. Unable to live with his pain, Ollie decides to commit suicide and take his best friend Stan (played by Stan Laurel) with him! They go on to the river and Ollie convinces Stan to jump with him by telling him that people wouldn’t know whom he is and he (Ollie) wouldn’t be around to tell them whom he was. After a failed, yet hilarious, attempt at drowning themselves (I love the moment with the shark swimming by and grabbing Ollie by the rump and then Ollie blamed Stan), they get talked in to join the French Foreign Legion by passing soldier (witch is Georgettes husband but neither do Ollie or Stan know), he told them that that was the only other way that he would for get about a woman was joining the foreign legion. They get accepted in the legion and they have laundry duty and in that duty they slacked off a lot every time a supervisor came they were found resting. A truck comes and delivers fruits and vegetables and they are told to wash them after their laundry duty, then Stan annoys Ollie and they started an accidental fire with the laundry and then go to the Commanders office and write him a memo saying that they are leaving the legion. Inevitably, they get charged with desertion, and they are sentenced to be shot at sunrise as they tried to sleep, not really cause they were worried about dying, they got a note saying that their was a exit under the floor and they manage to escape in a stolen airplane, ending with a crash and Ollie dying. After Ollie died you see Stan walking down a road and then he hears Ollie, but Ollie is now a horse, that is something that I forgot to mention that when they were trying to commit suicide in the river Stan was asking about reincarnation and wondered how they would be after they died also that was one of my favorite parts because Stan just kept on distracting Ollie from jumping into the river and then after they decided not to jump Stan throws the rock that was suppose to sink them taking Ollie with it and when I was almost laughing of my seat was when Ollie stands in the water and I noticed that the water wasn’t that deep and that their was no way of actually committing suicide in that river.

Some highlights of the film include the comedy moments with the attempted drowning, several funny moments at the French Foreign Legion, and two very nice musical moments (a short song-and-dance routine when they arrive at the French Foreign Legion, and Stan serenading Ollie playing his bedspring like a harp). The only two negative remark that I have is that their trying to tie reincarnation in with a joke at the end that, frankly, falls flat because it offends the people that believe in it and my second remark is that they over do a joke making it in the end not as funny as the first time they do it. So I would give this comedy a 9 out of 10, and two thumbs up.

A comedy film with the comedic duo, Oliver Hardy, and Stan Laurel, who goes through different kinds of mishaps while Ollie tries to forget the love of his life, Georgette.

The film “The Flying Deuces” started off with Ollie (played by Oliver Hardy) sending presents to the woman he loves named Georgette (played by Jean Parker) and had planned to marry her. Stan (played by Stan Laurel) had convinced Ollie to propose right away. But unfortunately, Georgette already has someone in her life, and doesn’t have the same feelings towards Ollie, which of course made him heartbroken. So he took the picture, flowers and chocolates that he had given her and from that point on the comedic duo goes through different idiotic, yet funny, mishaps to try to forget about Georgette. At first Ollie tried to commit suicide, and insisted Stand to join him, or else he will have no one anymore. But it wasn’t successful. Then a young man suggested they should join the foreign legion and so they did but Stan’s blabbering about Georgette didn’t help Ollie to forget about her. When they joined the foreign legion they found out that they are getting paid only three cents a day! They didn’t want to work there at first for less than twenty-five cents a day but they had no other choice and were forced to do the dirty work just for the sake of forgetting Georgette. They go through troubles such as accidentally burning the pile of laundry and trying to escape out of the prison. The ending was indeed funny and surprising. It’s impossible for someone not to laugh at least once throughout this film. The duo definitely made me laugh especially when they were attempting to commit suicide and Stan always had something to say and both ended up not committing suicide at all. The funny jokes and funny misfortunes from these two are funny, but some got a bit redundant and boring. Like when Stan was washing his face and kept bumping his head on the slanted ceiling, or when he kept pouring water on Ollie’s head. It was funny at first, and as it goes on and on it got old and boring and just made me think how some of these are a bit idiotic and are full of nonsense. It just didn’t make me laugh anymore. Or maybe it’s just me who’s hard to get amused by others’ silly misfortunes at times. The cinematography was pretty good. I like how they would zoom into the actors’ faces to get a clear look at their reaction of what’s happening. The lighting wasn’t bad either. There weren’t much dark scenes so it was pretty easy to see what’s going on. I give this movie 8 out of 10 stars because it was funny. Better than the previous films we have seen. I am a fan of comedies after all. With the excitement and jokes of this movie, I actually understood the whole plot. Sometimes when I watch boring films, it’s hard for me to follow the plot. I think Ollie and Stan are the perfect duo for a comedy film.

When Ollie tries to marry his true "love" and she rejects him, he joins the Frech Legion to forget her, and to cause chaos.

What do you get when you can’t get a girl and you try to forget about her in the army? This! This movie is such a great movie to start off. It is very funny and enjoyable by many, many audiences. In my opinion, this movie is one for the books.
So the movie starts off with Ollie and Stan, they are touring France and they are soon to be on their way home. The night that Ollie and Stan are supposed to be heading home, Ollie proposes to the girl that he loves but unfortunately, she rejects him because she is married. Ollie feels terrible and even though he didn’t get the girl, he still wanted to stay in France to commit suicide. So Stan agreed with Ollie to commit suicide with him. They make their way down to a river and tie themselves both up to a big stone block. After a while, the boys do not commit suicide because of Stan’s big mouth and not being able to shut it so they could finally jump into the river. When Stan does finally shut up, a soldier comes and tells them not to do it and to instead join the French Legion to help Ollie forget about Georgette. The one thing though, Ollie did not know that this soldier was Georgette’s husband. So the guys join the French Legion the next day and the first day they are there they already start to goof off and they do not follow orders so they are assigned to washing all the soldiers’ clothes. Even though Ollie and Stan were assigned to this task, they continue to goof off but doing so allowed Ollie to forget about Georgette, so they leave, unknowingly starting a fire with the clothes iron and setting all the soldiers’ clothes on fire! They try to escape but they fail and are sent to the army jail. When all hope seems gone, they were able to attempt to escape once again and start mayhem in the camp all over again. This includes making Georgette faint and destroying the leader of the camp’s office. After they are done there, they try their actual second time to escape. Do they escape? Or do they fail at doing so yet again? That I will not tell you and you must watch the movie to find out!
Now think of all of what I just mentioned above and add a little comedy here and there and you will see why this movie is so funny and enjoyable by many audiences. I also chose to not add many funny scenes that were in the movie to the review for the reason of not spoiling the movie. I chose to rate this movie 8 stars out of 10 because of it being so funny and having a great plot. This is slapstick at some of its best. I recommend buying a copy for yourself and watch this with all your family and friends because I’m almost sure that you will have a great time doing so.
