Smoke signals was made in 1998 and directed by Chris Eyre. The theme was forgiving your father and letting go of hard feelings and hurt. My general view of this movie was neutral but there are many things I personally would change about it. The atmosphere was calm and dry. The plot was not very deep but made a good point of emotionally letting go of someone or something. The momentum of Smoke signals was slow going but interesting.
I enjoyed the sarcastic personality of Thomas. Thomas was rescued from the fire by Victors father Arnold when he was a little baby. Thomas feels as if he knows Victor’s father in a way Victor does not. Thomas tries to help Victor understand his father by telling Victor stories he remembers about his father. When Thomas tells the interesting stories he uses a silly humor and catchy words. I also enjoyed the ethnic background of the Indians. I enjoyed how the Indians all had long hair; the same accents, and ate the same food. It was interesting to modern day Indians keep traditional values.
What I hated about the film was how slow it was. The movie was interesting, but there was no action, or mystery that kept me thinking and on my toes. The film did not catch my attention and was poorly made. I thought that the story of the movie could have been very interesting but the acting was also unbelievable. Also the scenery never changed, everything was the same and very boring and it became frustrating.
If I were to make this film, I would keep Thomas because I thought that he was very interesting. I would change the scenes more and make it more interesting and allot more going on. I would add more mystery, scandal, anger, fighting, etc, to keep my viewers on their feet and sweating. I would also make Victor’s dad more attractive and not so overweight.
I strongly suggest not seeing this film unless you’re in a dull relaxed mood and ready to pay attention. It is very boring and in order the actually know what is going on, you have to pay close attention. If you are having friends over for a movie night, do not rent this movie. My general view of this movie was neutral but there are many things I personally would change about it.
