Rating-**½ Somewhat inventive, somewhat stereotypical horror flick about a group of college kids on vacation in Mexico who make the regrettable decision to visit an ancient Mayan Ruin far off the beaten path in the jungle. Things quickly go wrong when the natives suddenly turn violent and refuse to let the tourists leave the landmark. Turns out there’s a reason behind the native’s methods- the ruins are infested with some type of gruesome, ancient disease that literally gets under the skin of its victims. The actors do a decent job of creating sympathetic characters, too bad that they’re just food for the gods. The movie is intriguing and has some original elements but it quickly dissolves into a gore fest with each character meeting a grisly fate. Reminded me of the campy flick ‘Cabin Fever’ which came out a few years back. This one doesn’t have the sense of humor however and comes complete with a disappointing open ended climax. Entertaining but unfortunately nothing special. Decent special effects though and some nice suspense make it worth seeing.
