Kimberly Pierce (Boys Don’t Cry) directed another spectacular movie. Stop Loss is the story of a Texas war hero and his fight not to return to another tour of duty. Ssgt. Brandon King (Ryan Phillippe) and Sgt. Steve Shriver (Channing Tatum) are two friends, who have known each other since they were young boys. Both joined the army and were sent to Iraq in the same unit. Together, they arrived home after their tour of duty, and were eager to resume their normal lives. Both, were happy to be home for many reasons, one main reason is that they were ending their contracts with the military. King finds out that is stop lossed and will be sent back to Iraq, for another tour of duty. But he refuses to do so. Brandon takes off with Steve’s girlfriend, who he wasn’t nice to when he returned home, to Washington D.C., in order to talk to the state senator about his contract being up and him being stop lossed. Meanwhile, Shriver reenlists in the military to go to sniper school, something he said if he had to do it again, he would go to sniper school. Eventually, King finds out the senator cannot do anything for him. So, he decides he needs to get out of the United States.
Phillippe and Tatum play excellent roles and really connect with the characters they played. Both have played good roles, but this was one of their best. All the actors and actresses did a good job in showing how war affects everyone. War affects everyone, not just the ones who loses families but those who have been stop lossed.
I would give this movie a great rating because, it didn’t only show how war affects people but what it does to people mentally and physically. Everyone, who played a role, did an amazing job. Some may say this is just another writer trying to make a preacher movie, but, this movie showed how people actually do not get what they want. Also, how people with more authority can control others.
